Anti-Virus Solutions

There are a lot of software packages out there.  From Mcafee and Norton to Kaspersky and Panda.  The problem with picking one is that if you ask 10 computer geeks, you will most likely get 10 different answers.  What do you choose if you have no idea where to start and the experts don’t completely agree?  Here is a place to start.

First: If there is one that you have used in the past and like it, keep it.  Most AV programs do about the same thing and work as well as any of them.  So being comfortable with what you are using is very important.  If you don’t know how to use it, it probably will not work as well for you as it should.

Second: What does it do and what do you need?  Do I need full system security or just Anti-Virus?  The basic is the Anti-virus it will usually scan for viruses in email and on your computer.  For the most part that is all you will need.  System security centers include firewall, spam blockers, and other features.  A little extra security usually isn’t a bad thing, but remember the extra features will need extra computing power and may slow down your system.

Third: Cost.  They range from free to $150/yr.  How to get the best bang for my buck.  Well…  Free options will protect from a large majority of viruses though they are not as effective as the pay versions.  Also they are licensed only for home users so if you want to be completely legal, don’t use them in your business.  If you stick around the $40-$50 range you should be pretty happy.

Finally: Ask a computer professional.  They can tell you more about the various options and likely have dealt with several different packages.  Also a good one will talk to you about what you need and will make suggestions based on your situation.

What do I recommend?  First look at suggestion one.  I want you to be comfortable with what you have.  If you are sick of all the ones you have tried.  Check this out: ESET Offers a great product at a great price.  I have used them for servers and homes.  You can also check out the downloads page for some of the free solutions.

Good luck, and remember if you’re in Salt Lake City, give us a call and we will help you out.
