For small Businesses there are essentially 2 flavors of server. A file server and a Small Business Domain Server. While in reality there are many different types of servers and operating systems that they use. Most small businesses use one of these two. If you think you may need something else please give us a call to discuss your needs.
File Server
This can be a workstation (not recommended) used with a shared directory, a Network Storage Device (NAS), or a Domain Server. Primarily these devices are used so that everyone can share files and have a central location where things are stored. File servers are often the primary need of small businesses.
We do not recommend using an active workstation as a file server. Each job can be taxing for PC hardware and software, performing both tasks increases the likelihood of errors and system failure. It is okay however to use desktop hardware to act as a file server.
Network storage devices are an ideal way to store information and ensure relative security. A NAS is similar to external hard drives which are designed to work over networks. They are also capable of performing raid functions to improve data security. (See previous posts for more info on Raid.) They are generally small and flexible in terms of storage size and configuration.
Domain Servers
This is what you would call the more traditional server. For many small businesses this means a Windows Small Business Server configuration. With this type of server you can control internet access, file sharing, user controls, email, and much more. While it is a very versatile package it is also very complex. Please do not attempt to set one up without a professional. Domain servers can be used to isolate data within a network, for example: You wish to store accounting data in a central file, but do not wish all of your employees to have access. With a Domain Server you can define specific files for specific users or user groups.
There are also many software packages which may require a domain server. Medical offices for example often require a EMR software which work under Domain conditions.
Think about what you need from a server, or what you want to accomplish at your office. This will help you decide which type of server is best for you. If you have more questions please give us a call and we will provide a free evaluation and discuss your needs.
